Ahead of the screening, some of the effects demonstrated included snow and bubbles, and the amount of each was so pathetically small, with it only coming from the front of the cinema, that the response from the audience was laughter rather than awe. There were less pleasant effects as well. While you never quite feel like you’re actually in the helicopter or in the car (as the ads for 4DX say you will feel), it is good craic. The added effects worked particularly well for the helicopter and car chase scenes when the surround sound, wind, alternate sudden, circular and shaky seat movements, with the occasional flash of light, meshed together. The movement of the chairs, which are organised by rows (and provide plenty of leg room, another plus), is just right – not quite roller coaster-esque but with enough momentum to give you a sense of giddy joy. It’s more mist-like than rain-like and doesn’t leave that dreaded feeling of moistness (*shudders*). Those concerned that the rain effects will have them wet and cold needn’t fear. The movie shown was Rampage and results of applying the 4DX to it were mixed but generally satisfactory.įirst off, here’s what worked. We had a first-hand experience of 4DX at last night’s Gala opening in Cineworld, Parnell Street. With streaming services becoming ever more popular, the hope is to tempt viewers back to the big screen. The phenomenon consists of motion seats and special effects like wind, fog, lightning, bubbles, water, and rain, which are synchronised with the action on screen. 4DX plans to continue this growth, and reach 50 Japanese screens by the end of the year.4DX is the latest development offering moviegoers an enhanced cinema experience. This follows rapid expansion in the Japan cinema industry, with 25 sites opening in 2015, four this April and now seven more in July – with an average of one new screen debuting every two weeks. With these openings, United Cinemas now represents 30 percent of all 4DX screens in Japan.ġ09 Cinemas, in anticipation of attracting more moviegoers who want a premium, immersive experience, opened a 4DX theatre at Hiroshima, located in a landmark area near the Hiroshima subway station, last week. United Cinemas, the largest operator of 4DX screens in Japan, increased its number from 11 to 14 sites, adding locations in Asahikawa, Wakaba and Nagasaki in July. During the first weekend, each site recorded successful occupancy rates with the screening, especially Natori site recorded 91 percent occupancy. I was extremely thrilled with 4DX’s motion and environmental effects, perfectly synchronized with the movie scenes so I felt like I was watching the movie in the middle of the sequences.”ĪEON Cinemas, Japan’s largest cinema chain, opened 4DX screens at its Natori, Chikushino, and Kyoto Katsuragawa sites on July 22, the latter being the first time this technology was available in the city of Kyoto. On the first screening day, a moviegoer who experienced the movie in 4DX said that “I’ve been looking forward to watching a 4DX movie for a long time. For the first screening weekend, ‘ One Piece Film Gold’ and ‘’Shin Godzilla’- represented 75% and 59% occupancy rate, respectively. Three 4DX screens were added in AEON Cinemas, another three in United Cinemas, and one screen in 109 Cinemas in recent weeks. 4DX recently released both of highly-anticipated Japanese titles, ‘ One Piece Film Gold’ and ‘’Shin Godzilla’ and has been received positive responses in Japanese box office. We will concentrate on expanding our 4DX locations in the country and look forward to broadening our business in its cinema industry,” said Byung Hwan Choi, CEO of CJ 4DPLEX. “We are excited to announce the roll-out of our business with significant partners in Japan. 4DX provides a growing number of Japanese moviegoers with an immersive cinematic experience that utilizes all senses, allowing the audience to connect with movies with motion, vibration, water, wind, snow, lighting, scents, and other special effects that enhance the visuals on-screen. 4DX is the only 4D brand that installs its screens in the entire Japan.Īs of today, there are 45 screens in Japan equipped with 4DX, the first and leading 4D cinema technology for feature films. In July alone, seven new 4DX auditoriums opened in the country through partnerships between CJ 4DPLEX – a subsidiary of CJ CGV – and AEON Cinemas, United Cinemas and 109 Cinemas. With these openings, 4DX solidifies its position as the number one 4D brand in Japan, expanding 4DX screens throughout Japan from the northernmost island, Hokkaido, to the southernmost island, Kyushu. Seoul, Korea (August 5, 2016) – 4DX, an immersive theatre technology featuring moving seats and environmental effects, continues to spread around the world with Japan as its fastest-growing market.
